Salma Hayek was born in Mexico and all of her childhood she had difficulty reading. She was a good student, so It wasn't until she was a teen that she was diagnosed with dyslexia.
When she arrived in Hollywood at the age of 25, She spoke almost no English. And that combined with her dyslexia, she knew that learning a new language would be nearly impossible.
And as a struggling actress she had to overcome many difficulties. She was rejected many times because she was a Latina.
"They told me a Mexican is never going to make it, because at the time, it was impossible for a Mexican to have a leading role in Hollywood".
“I had studio heads say to me, ‘You could have been the biggest star in America, but you were born in the wrong country. You can never be a leading lady, because we can’t take the risk of you opening your mouth and people thinking of their maids.’”
“Everybody thought I was so out of my league. The people in Hollywood were the first ones to try and discourage me. ‘Go back,’ they said. ‘You have no future here.’”
And she was actually told that her name was terrible and that she would “never make it with that name”. She answered:
“We’ll see about that.”
And Salma Hayek became a very successful actress with an amazing career. She even co-produced and starred in "Frida". The movie was nominated for six Academy Awards, including a best actress nomination, making her Worldwide famous.
